Delay in BECE marking
The 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination was written in July 2023. The marking of the scripts has been delayed until today 4th October.
The lack of funds from the government to WAEC is believed to be the reason the marking was delayed. The West African Examination Council, WAEC, used the year’s BECE as a weapon to receive the needed funding to pay the examiners for their previous services.
BECE Marking starts today 4th
Examiners of the BECE were called to report to commence marking the 2023 BECE today 4th. Currently, the examiners are at the various centers and marking the scripts.
Timelines to release the results
According to the examiners, marking the Basic Education Certificate Examination takes about two to three weeks.
This means that the marking of the BECE will end, at most, towards the end of this month, October 2023.
Also, it takes about three to four weeks to screen marked scripts and to collate the results before releasing them to the candidates and the general public.
This also means that the completed results can be released, at the earliest, around the third week of November.

When candidates enter Senior High schools
According to the existing standard, senior high school students must spend a minimum of one month in school.
However, when BECE results are released in the third week of November, they will be unable to spend about one month in school before Christmas in December.
Christmas holidays are statutory and long holidays in Ghana. This period starts at most from 24th December to 1st of January.
It is therefore expected that candidates will be asked to report to the first year of Senior High School in January 2024.
