Whether IELTS online test or paper test, you will be taking exactly the same IELTS test, with the same test content and structure.

With computer-delivered IELTS, you will

a. have more test dates to choose from than the paper test

b. your results will be available in 3-5 days.

c. have more test venues than the paper test

The only difference between the IELTS online test and paper test is that you can choose to type your answers or write them on paper – whichever suits you best.

IELTS online test on computer

You will answer the Listening, Reading and Writing sections on a computer at one of our official test centres. The Speaking test will still be face-to-face with a trained IELTS Examiner, as this is the most effective way to assess your speaking skills.

IELTS Academic test

The IELTS Academic test measures whether you have the level of English language proficiency needed for an academic, higher education environment. It reflects some of the features of academic language and assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training.

Take this test if you want to:

• study at either undergraduate or postgraduate level anywhere in the world
• apply for Tier 4 Student Visa at a university that is a Tier 4 Sponsor in the UK
• work in a professional organisation in an English speaking country.

Duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Format: There are four sections to the test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. When you book your IELTS test with the British Council, the test will take place in an official British Council IELTS test centre.

If you take a IELTS on paper test, your Speaking test may be offered on the same day as the other sections of the test, or up to a week before or after. You will receive notification in advance if your Speaking test is on a different day to your main test day.

If you choose an IELTS on computer test, you have a free choice of Speaking test dates and venues.

IELTS General Training test – prove you have practical, everyday English language skills

IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and tests reflect both workplace and social situations.

Take this test if you would like to:

• train or study at below degree level
• work or undertake work related training in an English speaking country
• emigrate to an English speaking country
• get a better job in your own country.

Duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Format: There are four sections to the test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. When you book your IELTS test with the British Council, the test will take place in an official British Council IELTS test centre, whether you choose IELTS on Paper or IELTS on Computer.

What is IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)?

If you are looking to work or study in UK, you may need to apply for a UK Visa and demonstrate that you have met the required level of English by taking a Home Office approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), such as IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training) or IELTS Life Skills.

What is the difference in test format between IELTS and IELTS for UKVI?

IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are the same in terms of format, content, scoring and level of difficulty. However, the Test Report Form which contains your results is slightly different to show that you have taken the test at an official IELTS for UKVI location, which is approved by the UK Home Office.
