WASSCE results: WAEC released latest errors to avoid and remedies

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has presented latest errors that candidates commit and lead to poor WASSCE results.

 

WAEC presented the errors to Heads of Department (HoDs) during a workshop that the WAEC organized for the HoDs. The final year students of Senior High Schools in the country will be writing the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The candidates and teachers, therefore, need to know the common mistakes commit by candidates in order to avoid them and to obtain a better WASSCE results

Purpose

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss with you some key observations we have made, and make recommendations for teachers to implement to ensure better academic performance (WASSCE results) of our students in the final year

 

Topics to be covered

  1. Observations/ common errors committed by candidates during WASSCE
  2. Suggested recommendations
  3. Preparation strategies towards WASSCE results

 

Expected outcome

The expected outcome of the meeting is to enhance academic performance of final year students in core subjects (WASSCE results) in SHS/SHTS.

 

Common errors committed by students during examinations

  1. Failure to prepare very well for the paper
  2. Failure to read instructions
  3. Not numbering answers  properly
  4. Students’ inability to identify scientific experiment set-ups, tools etc
  5. Spelling mistakes
  6. Inability of candidates to write formulas for compounds
  7. Use of wrong units
  8. Inability to plot graphs with correct values
  9. Time management before and during exams
  10. Problems with English Language
  11. Lack of transfer of knowledge from one subject to another

 

Recommendations

The following remedies were suggested to obtain a better WASSCE results

  1. Teachers should make efforts to explain scientific terms and conventions to their students during lessons
  2. Teachers have the duty to introduce the ideas of application of scientific concepts to everyday life experience
  3. Students should read story books and their lessons in English language more seriously
  4. Teachers should ensure that they cover the entire syllabus and also to provide adequate tutorials for their students
  5. Students should be taken through more practical
