GNAT using all means to secure rural area allowance for teachers

The employer, government, and teachers’ union agreed on a rural area allowance for teachers. However, the employer is yet to implement the payment of the allowance.

The employer did not disclose exactly the reason the government refused to implement the payment of the rural area allowance. But, stakeholders suggest the overall cost of paying the deprived area allowance is a very significant addition to the labor cost.

This is because the number of teachers is very high. And the majority of the country is rural areas. Therefore, the government may have to pay an allowance to almost every teacher in the country.

GNAT’s New Strategy.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers is using a different strategy to ensure the government pays the allowance to teachers in deprived areas.

The largest teachers’ union in the country is using the media to wipe up the public interest the rural area allowance. The nationwide publicity will put a lot more pressure on the employer to pay the allowance.

The union is using this strategy ahead of the upcoming negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Collective Agreement Review 2023 | More Allawa?

This is because citizens in very remote areas will understand that the government does not want to implement a simple solution that can get teachers to stay in and around their communities to teach their children.

The union engaged TV3 to run a series of documentaries about the need for the rural area allowance. The station plays the documentary every Sunday afternoon.

Kudos to the leadership of the union for the initiative. However, members are calling on the union to reform some of its activities. An example is the demand for the union to introduce an electronic mode of applying for loans.
