WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Ga And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023 Ga

Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Ga during the last held examinations.

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE In Ga Paper One (1)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTH

  1. Most candidates did well by trying to answer all the required questions.
  2. Candidates gave detailed narrations using good grammar, idiomatic expressions and well-thought out points.
  3. Candidates were able to organize their answers in a very good manner.
  4. Ideas and arguments were presented in a coherent manner.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’WEAKNESSES.

  1. Wrong spellings, word boundary and use of punctuation marks continue to pose a serious challenge to most candidates.
  2. Some used lower case to begin all their sentences and in some cases, did not end their sentences with a full stop. This made it difficult to determine where a sentence began or ended.
  3. . Some candidates failed to read and understand the rubrics before attempting to answer
  4. Some candidates also copied the whole comprehension passage or lifted portions of it to form their essays.
  5. Few candidates were not able to give appropriate topic to the passage questions.

 

A. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

  1. Teachers should teach all aspects of the language.
  2. Candidates should read intensively in the language.
  3. Teachers should give students more practice in the use of punctuation marks.
  4. Teachers should lay more emphasis during comprehension lesson.
  5. Teachers should organize spelling bee for the candidates to enable them to overcome their struggling with the orthography.

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE In Ga Paper One (1)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(i) Candidates gave detailed narrations using good grammar, idiomatic expressions and well-thought-out points.

(ii) Candidates were able to organize their answers in a very good manner.

(iii) Ideas and arguments were presented in coherent manner.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(i) Wrong spellings and faulty use of some punctuation marks.

(ii) Some used lower case to begin all their sentences in some cases.

(iii) Some candidates failed to read and understand the rubrics before attempting to answer the questions.

(iv) Some candidates copied the whole comprehension passage or lifted portions of it to form their essays.

(v) Few candidates were not able to give appropriate headings to the provided passage.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(i) Teachers should teach all aspects of the language.

(ii) Teachers should give copious exercises, especially in grammar and dictation.

(iii) Parents and teachers should encourage their wards to read extensively.

(iv) Teachers should help students to develop interest in the subject.

(v) Students should be guided to deduce suitable captions for given passages

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE In Ga Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

  1. A few of the candidates who have studied the set books seriously answered all the six questions admirably.
  2. Majority of the candidates allotted equal time to all the questions and answered all the four questions.
  3. A considerable number of candidates answered the questions on riddlessatisfactorily.
  4. A few of the candidates answered the questions on the set booksskillfully.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

  1. Some of the candidates misunderstood the instructions and attempted more than one question from one section.
  2. Inability of some candidates to discuss themes of the prose, drama and mood from theauthors.
  3. Inability of some candidates to identify, quote examples and discuss literary devices used by the authors.
  4. Inability of some candidates to distinguish between theme and structure of apoem.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES FOR WEAKNESSES

  1. Candidates should always take their time and read rubrics carefully before answering questions.
  2. Teachers should set mock examination questions in line with that of the final examination paper to give candidates the needed practice.
  3. Candidates should make it a point to try their hands on WASSCE past questions constantly, and discuss.
  4. Candidates need more exposure to literary practice on set books.
  5. Teachers should take the candidates through the mechanics of answeringquestions.
  6. Candidates should take the study of Ga seriously and stop regarding it as a subject of convenience

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE In Ga Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) A substantial number of candidates exhibited in-depth knowledge of Ga Culture and Oral Tradition by answering the questions on proverbs and chieftaincy satisfactorily.

(2) Most of the candidates were able to answer all the four questions because they allotted equal time to the entire question.

(3) Some candidates who had studied the set books seriously answered five out of the six questions commendably.

(4) Candidates need commendation for being able to identify literary devices from poems they studied.

(5) Candidates were able to identify the main characters and their roles in the novels.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES WEAKNESSES

(1) Some candidates misunderstood the instructions and answered more than one question from one section.

(2) Inability of some candidates to discuss the themes of the prose and drama texts and the mood of the authors.

(3) Inability of some candidates to give examples of literary devices used in the various set books.

(4) Poor answering of context questions.

(1) Teachers should take candidates through the mechanics of answering questions.

(2) Teachers should encourage candidates to read the selected books.

(3) Teachers should help candidates to dramatize the selected books in class.

(4) Parents should encourage their wards to develop interest in the Ghanaian language.

(5) Teachers should review WASSCE past questions with their candidates before they sit the examination.

(6) Teacher-made tests should be improved upon.
