WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Clothing /Textile And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023

Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Clothing /Textile during the last held examinations.

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Clothing/ Textile Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

Questions which demanded the recall of facts and those that requires short answers were well answered by most candidates. Candidates demonstrated a good knowledge in the following:

(a) sewing tools and equipment;

(b) measurement needed for making a skirt;

(c) ways of neatening plain seam;

(d) examples of edge finishes, principles of design and arrangement of fullness.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(a) Expressing in the English Language continues to be a major problem. A significant number could not express themselves very well, neither could they provide correct spelling for some common terms, example tream for trim, knitting, neating for neatening, fiba, fabra, for fibre, sissors, scisore, for scissors, chak, chock, chark for chalk, tap messure, tepa measure, tep meassar for tape measure, sewing marching, sewing marchen for sewing machine, niddle, dedle for needle, conspicious, conspious for conspicuous, custmatic, cosmactics, costmatics for cosmetics,

shearing, shiaring, sharing, for shirring, acessorics, accesories, accessores for accessories, and worm, worn for warm.

(b) Candidates performed poorly in questions that demanded the application of knowledge and the use of diagrams.

(c) A significant number of candidates ignored instructions and answered all six questions.

(d) There was unnecessary cancellation of answers, unnumbered answers and wrong numbering thereby the answers provided did not correspond with the questions.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(a) Candidates should be advised to answer the required number of questions. Answering more than expected does not attract any additional mark.

(b) Candidates should be encouraged to read the prescribed textbooks in addition to the notes given by their tutors.

(c) Notes given to students must be checked and marked by teachers this will ensure that all the necessary corrections are made.

(d) Qualified teachers who are knowledgeable in the subject should be made to handle the subject.

(e) To help improve candidates expressions, students should be given research work and be made to present their findings in class.

(f) In situations where teachers lack knowledge in any topic, they should invite resource persons to assist.

(g) Teachers should use technical terms while teaching so that students will be familiar with them.

(h) Candidates should be encouraged to read and follow the instructions on the front page of the answer booklet.

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE Clothing/ Textile Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) Presentation of answers was very well done by majority of the candidates. They answered each question on a fresh page, numbered them correctly and left spaces in�between sub-questions.

(2) Questions which demanded the recall of facts were very well answered by majority of the candidates, likewise those which demanded a word or two.

(3) Candidates demonstrated a good knowledge in the following areas:

– arrangement of fullness;

– uses of clothing;

– factors to consider when choosing fabrics;

– examples of textile fibres.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(1) A significant number of candidates showed evidence of poor knowledge in the subject because they failed to provide answers for questions which demanded the recall of facts.

(2) They failed to use the correct terminologies to answer questions.

(3) Questions that demanded the application of knowledge were poorly answered.

(4) English Language continues to be a problem. Quite a significant number of candidates could not express themselves well even where there was evidence that they were familiar with the topic.

(5) A good number of candidates spelt some clothing terminologies and words frequently used in the teaching of the subject wrongly. For example:

– Dat, dit, dot instead of dart;

– Fibric, fibic instead of fabric.

– Smoking, smokin, instead of smocking, etc.

(6) Candidates could not draw good diagrams where required

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Qualified Clothing and Textiles teachers must teach the subject and they should use the correct terminologies in their delivery.

(2) Spelling drill should be introduced at the beginning or at the end of lessons to help improve students’ spellings.

(3) Candidates should be encouraged to read the prescribed text books in addition to notes given by teachers.

(4) Chief Examiner’s reports should be made available to teachers.

(5) Revision prior to examination should be intensified.

(6) Candidates should practise answering questions which required the use of diagram

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Clothing/ Textile Paper Three (3)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

The commendable features noted in the work of candidates include the following:

(a) pressing fabric during the preparation stage and during the making-up of the article;

(b) improvement in the handling of the sewing machine;

(c) ability to make a plain seam by stitching along the seam line;

(d) presentation of variety of styles for self-garments;

(e) the making of well-fitting self-garments;

(f) display of good modelling skills in their self-garments.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(a) Inability to read and follow the instructions for the making-up

(b) Inability to work fast.

(c) Inability to transfer all the necessary pattern symbols including minute details like position of button.

(d) Inability to make French seam and facing.

(e) Carrying out tasks not demanded by the test.

(f) Inability to use the thimble.

(g) Poor neatening of self-garments.

(h) Inability to keep work area neat during the practicals.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

Candidates should:

(a) improve their reading skills;

(b) make adequate preparations before the examination;

(c) read and follow instructions given for the practicals;

(d) make effective use of figures or diagrams used in the test to enhance understanding

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Clothing/ Textile Paper Three (3)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) Improvement in the quality of machine stitching.

(2) Effective use of the pair of scissors during the making up.

(3) Improvement in the number of pins used and their directions during the laying out.

(4) Good modelling of well-fitting self-garments made by candidates, leading to great excitement among spectators.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

The general weaknesses observed were:

(1) inability to read and follow instructions;

(2) inability to use long strokes and short strokes along straight and curved edges respectively during the cutting out;

(3) inability to transfer all the necessary pattern symbols;

(4) inability to baste pieces of fabric together;

(5) inability to embroider the motif using appropriate stitches;

(6) inability to neaten plain seam, trim and neaten circular edge;

(7) inability to fix zipper using the centred method;

(8) inability to use the thimble.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Candidates should prepare very well before the examination by going through the required syllabus for the course.

(2) They should have more practical to improve their efficiency (both at speed and quality)

(3) They should use serviceable tools and equipment to facilitate work.
