WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Business Management And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023

Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Business Management during the last held examinations.

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Business Management Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

The Chief Examiner noted that most of the candidates were able to:

• express themselves clearly in the English Language and wrote legibly;
• answer the required number of questions including the Case study;
• answer very well the questions on;

– Motivation and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs,

– Functions of Central Bank and Commercial Bank,

– Conditions that must be met to make a contract legally binding.

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

The Chief Examiner reported that some of the candidates did not answer the questions on the Case study.

He also observed the following weaknesses of candidates:

• inability to explain a point beyond stating and listing the points;
• poor spellings e.g. The Central Bank is the lender of last result/resource instead of the last resort;
• inability to explain performance appraisal and its importance to an organization;
• inability to organize their answers very well.

C. REMEDIES TO CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

The Chief Examiner suggested that candidates should be advised and encouraged to:

• study the syllabus thoroughly and read extensively the recommended textbooks;
• learn and understand Business Management terminologies and concepts very well;
• improve upon their spellings and expressions in order to explain their points clearly and organize their work properly.

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

The chief examiner commended candidates for their ability to:

(1) state the importance of planning to an organization;

(2) explain why managers do not delegate;

(3) explain ways of creating agency and duties of an agent to his principal;

(4) explain types of bank accounts;

(5) state reasons for conducting performance appraisal;

(6) write legibly and orderly which made marking of the scripts easy.

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

The chief examiner reported that some of the candidates had difficulty:

(1) applying the knowledge, they have acquired in the various topics to answer some of

the questions under the Case Study;

(2) answering the questions on Insurance and Communication;

(3) explaining clearly some of the points they have listed;

(4) spelling correctly words like deposit, expert, etc which they spelt deposite, expect;

(5) following the rubrics of the paper correctly.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

The Chief Examiner suggested that candidates must:

(1) read the appropriate and recommended textbooks and novels to improve upon their

performance and their grammatical expressions as well as their spellings;

(2) be taught the various topics thoroughly and how to apply the knowledge acquired to answer the Case Study questions;

(3) be taught clearly all the aspects of Insurance and Communication;

(4) practice how to explain clearly their points with relevant examples which must be concise and precise.

WAEC Summary of 2019 WASSCE Business Management Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

The Chief Examiner commended some of the candidates for being able to:

(i) state the features of a private limited liability company;

(ii) list the sources of funds to the sole proprietor;

(iii) list parties to a bill of exchange;

(iv) explain external sources of recruitment;

(v) state the disadvantages of public corporation.

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

The Chief Examiner also noted that some of the candidates could not:

(i) explain time management and also failed to list the techniques of time management;

(ii) explain the functions of trade unions;

(iii) explain the functions of Human Resource Manager;

(iv) express themselves very well in the English Language.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES FOR CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

The Chief Examiner suggested that candidates must be:

(i) taught functions of management and functional management in detail;

(ii) helped to cover the topics in the syllabuses thoroughly;

(iii) given sufficient exercises to do. The exercises must be marked promptly and discussed in class;

(iv) encouraged to read extensively on both the topics and other novels to improve upon their expressions
