NAGRAT paid to convey TMI laptops to teachers

Some teachers have yet to receive their TMI laptops from the government. Teachers have made part payment for the TMI laptops since November 2021 but they have yet to receive the computers.

Teachers in some districts in the country can now receive their long awaited laptops.

This is because the National Association of Graduate Teachers has paid to convey the computers from the regional education office to the districts. Some of the computers were made available to the regions but the region could not convey the laptops to the districts. For obvious reasons. Lack of logistics to transport the computers as early as possible.

Krachi East District NAGRAT

It is for this reason why the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) in Krachi East District presented an amount of cheque to the regional office managers to assist them to transport the TMI laptops.

An announcement by the executives of the teachers’ union read:

“The National Association of Graduate Teachers Krachi East, today presented an undisclosed amount of money to support the transportation of TM1 laptops from the regional office.  The gesture was part of the association’s effort to facilitate quick distribution of the TMI laptops to teachers within the municipality.”

The government initiated a policy to supply all teachers in Ghana with a laptop each. The government’s component of the cost is seventy percent (70%) while every teacher pays thirty percent (30%).

Interestingly, the teachers also paid an extra cost, which was the  interest on the loan that the government took to pre-finance the policy.

Though the government promised to refund the interest that teachers paid on its behalf. The government is yet to refund the money after one and half years.

The teachers’ unions are equally mute about when the government will refund the money.

It is unclear whether the government has any intention of refunding the money that was unduly taken from the teachers.

Related developments

In a related development, the government has promised to provide one tablet to each senior high school student in the country.

The intention seems ridiculous because the government could not provide teachers with TMI laptops, which the teachers paid 30% as part of the cost plus interest on the government’s loan. But it wants to foot a 100% cost for students, which is about twenty times more than the teachers’ population. A government which could not supply textbooks to students and teachers in the correct proportion

It appears either the government will perform a miracle to supply the tablets or the government will use a century to supply one batch of students.
