Labour Unions Held In A Hostage Situation Over Base Pay Negotiations. [Limited options?]
1. The Trade Union Congress appears to be in a hostage situation over the 2023 base pay negotiations.
2. For whatever reason, the government decided to wait until a week until the presentation of the 2023 annual budget to parliament to call for the negotiation of a base pay increase.

3. As expected, the expected negotiations came to naught and the budget for 2023 was presented without the actually negotiated rate for the base pay.
4. Interestingly, the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) being paid to formal sector workers is also expected to end this December. Meanwhile, there is no conclusion about what rate of salary increase will be effected next year.
5. After today’s negotiation meeting, the next scheduled date for the continuation of negotiations is 20th December, 2022.
6. The hostage situation the labour unions have found themselves is whether they could allow the CoLA payment to end this month without any agreed base pay increase just in attempt to obtain a better salary increase for members or labour unions, for fear of COLA expiring, will accept any compromised base pay increase.
