Imagine The Ridiculously Low Number Of Layers In The 5 Northern Regions

Highlights

Due to many state mechanisms, becoming a lawyer has become a herculean task compared to putting a thread through a needle.

According to Kweku Azar, a US-based Ghanaian lawyer who secured a favourable ruling at the supreme court of Ghana to eliminate admission interviews into the Ghana School of Law, this year’s entrance exam for the Ghana School of Law “is more challenging than most bar exams. We delight in falling and frustrating youth”. Below is the breakdown of the number of lawyers in the five (5) northern regions. Ridiculously low.

It is interesting to note the five (5) northern regions with fifty-five (55) districts have only thirty-nine (39) lawyers. The average lawyer per district is thus 0.71, according to Kweku Azar.

From the raw number of lawyers in the five northern regions, sixteen (16) of the districts will not have a lawyer if the lawyers are to be paired with each district.

The question, therefore, is how would citizens obtain the services of a lawyer in such areas and, if the lawyers are available, how would they afford the services of a lawyer with the basic principle of demand and supply?

It is therefore about time Ghanaians demand from the politicians, and not the Ghana Legal Council, to fix the problem through electoral decisions.
