Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination Regular Updates

Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination Regular Updates

The National Teaching Council (NTC) is the agency responsible for registering and licensing all teachers in the country, Ghana. This platform is created to update all teachers and graduates who want to become teachers about latest operations of the agency.

*Dear Ghanaians, those who failed the GTLE are graduates first. Lets rewind the clock.

The fact is that the candidates who failed the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) are graduates first though they are trained to be teachers.

In proper terms, they are university graduates. We can call them university graduates.

They are Senior High School graduates who passed WASSCE and gained admission into the universities with their results.

They are graduates who passed all their university exams successfully.

Therefore, why should we call them with implied names instead of the generic names they have acquired?

Rationale

Ghanaians should know that the candidates who failed are products of our school system.

The Senior High School system specifically and the university system are no longer interested in sacking non-performing students. Perhaps grades for whatever.

When the school system and the majority of parents do not see any problem with candidates passing their WASSCE through fraudulent means, these bad pass rates will be the result.

The pass rate at the GTLE may not mean the current licensure examination is the best approach. The largest teachers union, GNAT, through it’s general secretary, has called for a broader dialogue.

Meanwhile, some people also believe the mass failure is a financial decision by the government through the organisers of the exam to fail that number of candidates.

Despite the call for a broader dialogue and/ or the belief by some sections of the public, the fact still remains.

The candidates who failed are products of our education system.

How did they get through the system until the final end? That is if they have actually failed.

The high failure rates should be an eye opener for all stakeholders to do something about the Ghana teacher licensure examination or the schools system or the financial situation in the country.

*May 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination results

The Registrar of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, has revealed that out of the 7,728 prospective teachers who sat for the licensure examination last month, only 1,277 passed.

The figure represents 16.5 percent of the candidates who sat again for the Ghana teacher licensure examination, introduced to license teaching practitioners.

The candidates

According to Dr. Addai-Poku, all the candidates had sat for the exam at least twice, with some sitting as many as nine times.

Last chance

He explained that those affected had one more chance to re-write the exam in the latter part of the year before its format and content changed.

Trouble for diploma holders

He said candidates who would fail at their last chance and would want to continue to resit the licensure examination, would be those with first degree.

He stated that “those with a diploma will be required to upgrade themselves to acquire a first degree before they can resit the exam.”

“We are reforming and restructuring the examination and we will start it this year with those who have qualified to write it for the first time,” he added.

New format for Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination

He said unlike the current licensure examination where the candidates were examined in numeracy, literacy, and professional skills, this time around, they would have to be examined in a specific area of specialty.

Dr. Addai-Poku further explained that a candidate who aspired to teach geography must, in addition to the three areas, be examined in geography.

About the NTC

The Ghana teacher licensure examination or NTLE was introduced by the government in 2019 backed by the Education Act of 2008, Act 778, with the first-ever teacher licensure exams taking place in September 2018.

The first licensure examination took place in September 2018 and over 28,000 newly-trained teachers.

The introduction of teacher license and continuous professional development were key policies being pursued by the government through the NTC, which was aimed at improving the professional standing and status of teachers in the country.
