The need for Ghanaian residents to link their national identity card numbers to their bank accounts effective 1st July, 2022 has given criminals and fraudsters the opportunity to quickly devise fraud schemes to either take over the bank accounts of their victims or just gather personal confidential information related to the bank accounts of victims for various purposes.
A fraud alert from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has indicated that some fraud syndicates are taking advantage of the rush to link Ghana card to bank accounts by sending text messages to victims requesting them to provide:
1. Bank account number
2. Phone number
3. Mobile app PIN
4. One-Time Password (OTP)
The fraud alert from EOCO also revealed some daring criminals also call their victims to request the details mentioned.
A caution attached to the Ghana card fraud alert advised the public not to click any link sent to them unless they have confirmed the link is from the bank.
