Demand For COLA By Labour Unions Taking Shape Just Like Last Year

Demand for COLA by labour unions in the country is gathering some steam. The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is leading the charge in the demand for the cola. The president of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Angel Carbonu, was on Citi Eyewitness news today, 3rd April 2023 to make the point, just like they initiated the action last year.

Highlights

1. The demand for COLA by labour unions was initiated by the National Association of Graduate Teachers and immediately supported by the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana.

2. The action gathered the needed steam when the Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT, also joined forces later.

3. In the end, other public sector workers joined the teachers and succeeded in obtaining a 15% cost of living allowance (COLA).

New demand for COLA by labour unions

1. The National Association of Graduate Teachers, NAGRAT, has started advocacy for COLA again this year.

2. On Citi Eyewitness news today, the president of NAGRAT made his arguments for the COLA

a. Primarily, the new tax bill that was passed on the 31st of March 2023 will make workers worse off, according to the NAGRAT president. Only people who take the minimum wage salary will not be affected by the new income tax bill.

b. Secondly, the 30% salary increment that was given to workers appears to be a sham. This is because utility bills were increased by almost the same percentage (29.9%) shortly after the salary increment.

c. Plus the general tax imposition on many goods and services by the new tax bills, the NAGRAT president believes such taxes will be transferred to the general public through pricing.

Conclusion

It is yet to be seen if other labour unions in the country will join forces with NAGRAT to demand the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). The latest development may just be a general demand for COLA by labour unions in the country.
