Complications of Typhoid Fever : Typhoid Fever can lead to your intestines being perforated. And a perforated intestine can easily be lethal. The worse is that, the disease could produce signs and symptoms that are similar to that of malaria, which could make people attempt treating it at home. Basic knowledge of this deadly disease can save you or someone around you.
Typhoid fever, also known as enteric fever, is a bacterial infection caused by a bacterium called Salmonella typhi, that can be life threatening. This bacterium can spread throughout the body and affect many organs if not treated promptly. Many people have been affected by this disease and need to know more about it to avoid or prevent complications and also subsequent infections.
The bacteria is very contagious and an infected person can spread the disease through their poo or pee.
If someone eats or drinks water infected with the bacteria, the person can be infected. It is necessary to wash your hands with soap and water after pooing or peeing to avoid the spread of this bacteria.
Typhoid is prevalent in places with less sanitation , hygiene and poor source of drinking water. Typhoid is more common in children since they tend to put anything they see into their mouths.
Some causes are:
1 . Sharing toilet With an Infected person: When an infected person visits the toilet and touches the door handle with the infected poo and another person touches the door hand and touches his or her mouth before washing his or her hands, the person can be infected .
2 . Drinking unsafe water or drinking water contaminated with the virus.
3 . Eating from food vendors who are infected.
4. Eating foods or vegetables sprayed with or washed with contaminated water.
Signs and symptoms:
1. Headache
2 . High body temperature
3. Vomiting
4 . Chills
5 . Diarrhea or constipation
6 .Loss of appetite
Prevention
1 . Avoid eating from food vendors
2 . Drinking clean water or boiling it before drinking.
3 .Wash your hands with soap and water after visiting the toilet or washroom .
4 .Wash foods or vegetables with clean salty water or vinegar before eating.
Complications of Typhoid fever
1. Internal bleeding
2 . Peritonitis or intestinal perforation . This is a very serious complication of typhoid fever which is very fatal and needs to be attended to immediately.
Note that some people could have the bacteria in their system (carriers) but will not show any symptoms. Such people could spread the disease. That is why it is important to visit the hospital on a regular basis to test for typhoid to avoid spreading it to close relations unknowingly./ Complications of Typhoid Fever
