Causes, Symptoms and Management of a Serious Skin Disease: Pemphigus

Pemphigus is a disease which is caused by the immune system. The immune system is the body’s defence against infection. When you have an infection, your body defenses itself through your immune system. In the process of the body defending itself, the immune system mistakenly attacks the skin’s top layer and this can cause blistering of the skin. It can also affect the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and the genitals. Pemphigus can be life threatening if not treated. Know the causes, symptoms and management of this serious skin disease to avoid any unwanted complications of Pemphigus.

Pemphigus can occur at any age, but it’s common in old age and middle-aged people.

Causes of Pemphigus

Pemphigus is an immune system disease. The body fights and defenses itself against infections. The antibodies produced by the body to defend itself can mistakenly attack the skin cells and mucous membranes.

1. Exposure to allergens

3. Middle age

4. Regular use of non – steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID).

Signs and Symptoms of Pemphigus

1. Fluid filled blisters on your skin

2. Blisters that bleed slightly

3. Light sensitivity

4. Pain around the blisters

5. Peeling of skin around the blisters

6. Fever

7. Itchy skin

8. Fatigue

How to manage your symptoms

1. Avoid spicy or acidic foods that irritate the blisters in your mouth and throat

2. Stay away from sunlight or wear a protective cover to protect your skin from sun damage.

3. Use soaps and lotions that do not contain fragrance to prevent skin irritation

4. Care for the blisters as directed by your health care provider.

The blisters can be infected. Treat Pemphigus immediately to avoid any complications.
