Causes, Signs, home remedies and Prevention of Bronchitis / The Major Cause Of Cough In Children

Bronchitis is the inflammation of the large tubes in the lungs, which carry air to the lungs. When these tubes are inflamed, they become swollen and produce mucus. The  increased production of mucus and the swollen tubes make your child cough and sometimes cause difficulty breathing.

The common cause of bronchitis is viral but bacteria can also cause it. Because bronchitis is normally caused by virus,it’s not advisable to give your child antibiotics when he or she is having it. Children who live with parents who smoke often get affected by bronchitis.

Causes of Bronchitis

1. When someone with bronchitis coughs without covering the nose and mouth, the person sends infected droplets into the air.

2. When you touch an infected surface and touch your nose or face without washing your hands.

Risk Factors of bronchitis

1. Enlarged tonsils

2. Asthma

3. Allergies

4. Chronic sinusitis

5. Weak immune system

6. Have an underlying condition

7. Exposure to chemical fumes for a while

8. Second hand Smoking

Signs and Symptoms

Prevention of Bronchitis

1. Wash your hands and your child’s hands regularly with soap under running water.

2. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow

3. Keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.

Home Remedies for Bronchitis

1. Give your child a lot of fluids

2. Apply warm compressors on the child’s chest

3. Let the child rest in an upright position to avoid being choked or airways being blocked by mucus.

4. Ensure good humidity

5. Eliminate irritants

6. Give your child warm water with lemon juice and honey.

7. Encourage intake of fruits especially, citrus fruits. They contain a lot of vitamin C, which will boost the immune system to fight the illness.
