WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Electronics And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023

WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Electronics And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023

Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Electronics during the last held examinations.

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Electronics Paper Two (2)

A. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(c) Majority of the candidates had a fair knowledge of electronic components that feature in integrated circuits (IC).

(d) Majority of the candidates were able to recall the advantages of ICs over discrete components.

(e) Most of the candidates had a fair idea of appliances that utilize thermostatic sensing.

B. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(d) Majority of the candidates did not demonstrate knowledge and understanding of electronics.

(e) Majority of the candidates could not answer the questions satisfactorily.

(f) Most of the candidates did not prepare adequately for the exams.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(c) Candidates should read widely on electronics text books to broaden their knowledge in the subject.

(d) Candidates should be taught the techniques of answering questions.

(e) Some recommended Electronic text books should be made available to students. Examples are;

(i) Semiconductor theory by Parker and Parker;

(ii) Exploring Electronics by Boss W, Electronics made easy by F. Fllyord.

(4) Heads of Institutions must ensure adequate coverage of the syllabus before the examination.

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE Electronics Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) The majority of the candidates had fair knowledge of parts of a cathode ray oscilloscope.

(2) Candidates were able to state some applications of integrated circuit.

(3) Candidates were able to state some devices that use the principle of electromagnetism in its operation.

(4) The majority of the candidates drew very good and workable circuit diagrams.

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(1) The majority of the candidates did not demonstrate knowledge and understanding of electronics.

(2) The majority of the candidates could not answer the questions satisfactorily according to the rubrics.

(3) Most of the candidates had difficulty in answering the questions properly.

(4) Most of the candidates did not prepare adequately for the exams.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Candidates should read widely on electronic text books to broaden their knowledge in the subject.

(2) Candidates should be taught the techniques of answering questions.

(3) Some recommended text books (Electronics) should be made available to students. Examples: Electronics made easy by F. Fllyord, Exploring Electronics by Boss M, The Semiconductor theory by Parker & Parker, etc.

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Electronics Paper Three (3)

A. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) Majority of the candidates were able to perform both experiments appropriately.

(2) Candidates were able to use their readings to plot the graph according to the scales.

B. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(1) Some of the candidates provided irrelevant information by redrawing the circuit diagrams from the question before answering them. This was not demanded by the rubrics.

(2) Some of the candidates reversed the axis of the graph by plotting Vin on the vertical axis and Vout on the horizontal axis.

(3) Some of the candidates seemed to have problem with the measuring instruments.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Candidates should read instructions provided in the question and follow it strictly.

(2) Candidates should be provided with sufficient instruments if possible during practical activities in school.

(3) Candidates should be encouraged to perform more activities on instrument reading and recording

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE Electronics Paper Three (3)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) Candidates were able to perform both experiments appropriately.

(2) Candidates were able to use their results to draw good graphs.

(3) Most candidates understood the principles of how a zener diode operates.

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(1) Some of the candidates continue to provide irrelevant information which was not demanded in the rubrics; e.g., redrawing of the circuit and pictorial diagrams in the answer booklet.

(2) Some of the candidates were not able to transfer the theory knowledge into practical

activities.

(3) Some of the candidates had problem in recording the readings correctly in the table.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Candidates should be encouraged to provide relevant information.

(2) Candidates should remember that all practical activities are based on theory topics. They must therefore be able to transfer the theory knowledge into practice

It is the hope of our team that candidates will perform better when teachers and candidates go through this summary of strengths, WASECE candidates’ weaknesses in Electronics and remedies and apply same
