WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Dangme And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023 Dangme
Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Dangme during the last held examinations.
WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE In Dangme Paper One (1)
A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES STRENGTHS
- In general, candidates grasped the fundamental skills of essay writing.
- They exhibited maturity in the presentation of ideas in their essays writing.
- Candidates ensured good paragraphing.
- Some candidates understood some linguistic issues such as transcription of words and the description of the vowels in Dangme.
- Showing improvement in their orthography.
B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES WEAKNESSES
- Some candidates displayed the usual trend of spelling errors.
- Problems of dialectal expressionsinstead of the standard Dangme.
- Most candidates were also guilty of not properly punctuating their sentences.
- Some candidates copied some portion of the passage as essay.
- Few candidates deviated in their essay writings.
C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES
- Teachers should teach all the aspects of the language especially reading, spelling, phonology, morphology and grammar.
- Teachers should encourage candidates to speak the language during the lesson.
- Intensive and extensive reading should also be taught to enrich students’ overall language.
- More exercise should be given to candidates, mark and discuss with candidates.
WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE In Dangme Paper One (1)
A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS.
(1) Candidates showed considerable improvement in the use of the orthography. The spelling, words division and the general use of punctuation marks by majority of the candidates were very good. Upper and Lower-case letters were appropriately used by most candidates.
(2) Candidates exhibited maturity in the presentation of ideas and points in their essays.
(3) A sense of maturity was also demonstrated in the use of appropriate expressions as well as the use of good grammar.
B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
(1) A few candidates also wrote the features of letter writing for some questions that did not require those features.
(2) Some candidates also copied the whole comprehension passage or lifted portions of it to form their essays.
(3) Few candidates were not able to give appropriate captions to the given passage.
C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES
(1) Teachers should teach all aspect of the language.
(2) Teachers should engage students in conversations, using the language. This will enable
them to correct wrong expressions and pronunciations.
(3) Students should also be taken through regular dictation exercises to improve on their
spelling.
(4) They should also be encouraged to cultivate the habit of reading extensively texts in
the language.

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTH
Improvement noted in candidates’ answers which should be encouraged.
- Some candidates demonstrated a good understanding of the questions and answered them quite appropriately.
- Some candidates were able to discuss the points as demanded by some of the questions.
- Most candidates exhibited their strength in the area of customs and institutions.
- Some candidates exhibited some level of maturity in their use of language such as appropriate use of proverbs, idioms and other figures of speech.
B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
- Writing short notes on three characters were poorly handled by some candidates.
- Some candidates expressed themselves in spoken and dialectal forms instead of the standard Dangme.
- Some candidates answered two questions from one section leaving out a section unanswered.
- Generally candidates performed poorly in the poetry section. They did not appreciate the poem with the features such as number of stanza, lines, diction.
- The mood of the poet was also not discussed.
C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES;
- Teachers should teach all aspects of the language especially poetry where candidates often perform poorly.
- Candidates should read the rubrics well be answering the questions.
- Teachers should motivate students to read more Dangme books.
- More class exercises should be given to students. Exercises should be marked and discussed to enable students overcome their weaknesses
- Teachers should teach students techniques of answering questions.
- Teachers should teach the students the standard Dangme as against the dialectal ones.

A. CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS
(1) Generally, candidates demonstrated good understanding of the questions and answered them appropriately.
(2) Most candidates exhibited their strength in customs and instructions and oral literature.
(3) Prose and drama were also well tackled.
(4) Most candidates exhibited some level of maturity in their use of language; such as appropriate use of proverbs, idioms and other figures of speech.
B. CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
(1) Most candidates performed poorly in the poetry where candidates were to identify literally devices.
(2) Short notes on characters were also poorly handled by some candidates.
(3) Some candidates did not comply with the rubrics – answering two questions from one section.
(4) Candidates sometimes gave riddles instead of proverbs.
(5) Candidates were not able to express themselves well during discussion.
SUGGESTED REMEDIES
(1) Candidates should be given more exercise on poetry.
(2) Language teachers should be encouraged to teach all aspects of the language
(3) Teachers should lay more emphasis on literally devices.
(4) Teachers should help candidates to dramatize the selected drama books in class.
(5) Parents and teachers should encourage candidates to develop more interest in the Ghanaian language.
