All To Know About The Higher Education Certificate In Uganda

So, previously, admissions to Higher Education programmes in Uganda required candidates to have passed with atleast 2 principal passes for them to do a degree course or one principal pass and two subsidiaries for one to do a diploma programme. There was no remedial programme for candidates who qualify for UACE but have not scored sufficiently good grades to enroll for degree or diploma programmes. The only available option then was for them to repeat S6 or enroll for a certificate programme using S4 results.
The Higher Education Certificate was therefore designed to provide an alternative route to join Higher Education.

🎯 The Higher Education Certificate in Uganda is a nationally recognized level four Certificate of the Higher Education qualification framework and its minimum standards have been set by the National Council for Higher Education.

🎯 Minimum admission requirements to Higher Education as per the National Council of Higher Education require a student to have UACE with atleast two subsidiary passes obtained in principal subjects or it’s equivalent.

🎯 Student’s with Vocational qualifications at level 2 or level 3 can also do the Higher Education Certificate and cross over to Higher Education.

🎯 Students with foreign secondary school qualifications that are not considered equivalent to UACE but permit admission into Higher Education in the foreign country can also do the Higher Education Certificate as a foundation programme then cross over to Higher Education.

🎯 The minimun duration of the Higher Education Certificate Programme according to the National Council of Higher Education shall be one academic year (structured as two semester or three trimester programme).

🎯 A student can enroll for the Higher Education Certificate in any University (public or private) or any Institution of Higher Learning in Uganda for as long as it has been cleared by the National Council for Higher Education to run the programme.

🎯 Different Universities have different Intakes of the Higher Education Certificate programme. Please check with the University of your choice whether they have the programme and when they will be accepting applications.

🎯 The Fees for the Higher Education Certificate vary so there is no standard fees structure. Again, check with the Higher Education Institutions for their fees structure of the Higher Education Certificate.
