CHASS Contemplates Reopening of SHS, Awaits Direction From Director-General Of G.E.S And Ministry Of Education, According To Citi Eyewitness news
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools, CHASS, contemplates the reopening of SHS in the country, Ghana, over the lack of foodstuffs to feed students, who are resuming school effective today, Tuesday 10th January 2023.
In a Citi Eyewitness news interview with the president of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools, he stated CHASS members are awaiting direction from the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and the minister of Education regarding how they will proceed with the reopening of schools.
The CHASS president indicated that as at today, 10th January 2023, the reopening date for Senior High Schools in the country, most of the schools are yet to receive adequate foodstuffs to feed students. He also lamented that monies meant for perishable goods were also not released at the reopening date. According to reports, “there are only four main foodstuffs that are released. They are beans, maize, gari and tin tomato”.
It is yet to be known whether the Director-General of G.E.S and the ministry of Education will supply enough foodstuffs and release funds to schools within the week to enable the schools run effectively.
In a related development, the CEO of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, disclosed that the issues of inadequate foodstuffs continue to be a financial problem. “If you have money, you could buy all the foodstuffs you need.” So clearly, the challenge is financial.
On records, it was revealed that it was only the first year of the free Senior High School policy that all budgetary allocations were released. After that, budgetary allocations for the policy were between 50% and 65%.
