Top 10 lessons learned from the book – Atlas of the Heart
1. Places We Go When Things Are Uncertain
Vulnerability is the emotion that we experience during times of uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.
Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.
2. Be Like Everyone Else, but Better
When we compare, we want to be the best or have the best of our group.
The comparison mandate becomes this crushing paradox of “Fit in and stand out!” It’s not be yourself and respect others for being authentic, it’s “Fit in, but win.”
3. Places We Go When Things Don’t Go as Planned
Disappointments may be like paper cuts, but if those cuts are deep enough they can leave us seriously wounded.
exercise in vulnerability helps us maintain meaningful connection with ourselves and others.
4. Places We Go When We’re Hurting
Hope is a function of struggle—we develop hope not during the easy or comfortable times, but through adversity and discomfort.
Hope is forged when our goals, pathways, and agency are tested and when change is actually possible.
5. Places We Go with Others
Compassion is the daily practice of recognizing and accepting our shared humanity .
Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.
6. Places We Go When the Heart Is Open
We need more love between us, but also among us. Not rainbow and unicorn love, or commercialized love. We need more real love. Gritty, dangerous, wild-eyed, justice-seeking love.
7. Places We Go When We Feel Wronged
Anger is a catalyst. Holding on to it will make us exhausted and sick. Internalizing anger will take away our joy and spirit.
It’s an emotion that we need to transform into something life-giving: courage, love, change, compassion, justice
8. Places We Go to Self-Assess
The emotion of humility involves understanding our contributions in context, in relation to both the contributions of others and our own place in the universe.
Humility allows us to admit when we are wrong.
9. We Are Ourselves
When we feel lost, adrift in our lives, our first instinct is to look out into the distance to find the nearest shore. But that shore, that solid ground, is within us. The anchor we are searching for is connection, and it is internal.
10. Don’t Look Away
Don’t look down. Don’t pretend not to see hurt. Look people in the eye. Even when their pain is overwhelming. And when you’re hurting and in pain, find the people who can look you in the eye.
