WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Woodwork And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023

Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Woodwork during the last held examinations.

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Woodwork Paper Two (2)

A.. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES STRENGTHS:

(a) Candidates performed very well in the following:

SECTION A

– Stating two safety precautions to be observed when operating a portable power tool.

– Stating the main use of the Forstner bit.

– Listing four parts of a wood lathe

– Listing the two methods of seasoning timber.

SECTION B

– Good pencil work

– Neat drawings

– Indicating a selected freehand pictorial sketch for development.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES WEAKNESSES

(a) Candidates showed the following weaknesses:

SECTION A

– Inability to sketch the forstner bit

– Inability to state any two steps involved in sharpening a chisel

– Failure to state the reason why an adhesive is recommended for internal use only.

SECTION B

– Failure to show the cutting plane on the front elevation, and to dimension work.

– Failure to state the scale used in the drawings.

– No border lines and title blocks.

 

C.. SUGGESTED REMEDIES:

(a) Candidates must be given adequate exercises in drawing to enable them get used to providing cutting planes, border lines, title blocks and indicating the scale of the drawing with dimensions

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE Woodwork Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES STRENGTHS

(1) Most candidates demonstrated good understanding of the Third Angle Orthographic projection.

(2) Majority of candidates arranged their work orderly. Layout and neatness were satisfactory.

(3) Most candidates observed the dictates of the rubrics.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES WEAKNESSES

(1) Most candidates did not attempt question four. The few who attempted did a poor work.

(2) Most candidates produced sketches without using the scale given neither did they dimension their drawings.

(3) Most candidates demonstrated their lack of knowledge in draughtsmanship. They did not produce border lines and title blocks.

(4) Most candidates produced sketches of cabinet without plinth/stand both for initial drawings and detailed drawings.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES:

(1) Candidates should be taught how to properly produce sketches and constantly practice sketching.

(2) Teachers should endeavour to emphasise on the need for candidates to set up their papers on the drawing board, draw border lines, write their names, date and use the scale given, etc.

(3) Students should be encouraged to read wide around the subject to improve their vocabulary in the subject.

(4) Teachers should endeavour to complete the syllabus with candidates.

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

Some candidates exhibited appreciable skills in the following areas:

  1. Candidates’ ability to read and interpret the working drawings correctly.
  2. Candidates’ ability to mark-out to the stated dimensions on the detailed drawings.
  3. Candidates’ ability to saw successfully and demonstrated improvement in the chiselling work.
  4. Candidates’ ability to assemble the various work pieces together to complete the required nail box.

 

B. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

  1. Quite a number of candidates inability to read and interpret the working drawings correctly.
  2. Some candidates’ inability to mark-out accurately.
  3. Candidates’ inability to cut and remove waste accurately
  4. Candidates’ failure to use well sharpened cutting tools.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES FOR THE WEAKNESSES

To remedy these weaknesses it is recommended that:

  1. Teachers should intensify the teaching of orthographic drawings.
  2. Teachers should give enough practical exercises which involve the reading and interpretation of working drawings.
  3. Teachers should impress upon students to use well sharpened tools.
  4. Teachers should teach and demonstrate the correct procedure for marking-out on workpieces.
  5. Candidates must acquire the basic techniques of sawing chiselling accurately through constant practice well ahead of the final year practical examination.
  6. Teachers should ensure that candidates use correct and appropriate tools to execute every operation during practicals.

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE Woodwork Paper Three (3)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

Some commendable features in candidates’ responses included the following:

(1) some candidates demonstrated detailed knowledge and understanding of the working drawings and interpreted correctly;

(2) some candidates showed slight improvement in the marking-out practices;

(3) some candidates demonstrated the ability to construct good joints;

(4) others also showed the ability to assemble the work.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

Candidates’ weaknesses were noted in the following areas. Most candidates were not able to:

(1) read and interpret the working drawings correctly;

(2) mark-out accurately;

(3) cut out perfect joints;

(4) assemble the work to perfect squareness;

(5) work to the required dimensions;

(6) finish their work to give it the required appeal.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

To remedy these weaknesses, it is recommended that:

(1) the teaching of Orthographic drawing in the schools should be intensified. This will go a long way to enhance candidates understanding and the correct interpretation of working drawings;

(2) candidates should be given adequate practical exercises which involve the reading and interpretation of working drawings;

(3) teachers should go the extra mile in demonstrating the skills involved in marking-out the different type of joints used in furniture construction for candidates to emulate;

(4) teachers should inculcate in the candidates the acquisition of basic practical skills of taking accurate measurements, transfer of measurements form a working drawing onto work pieces, sawing, chiselling out waste, fixing of screws, handling and usage of special purpose hand tools.
