WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Kasem And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023 Kasem

Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Kasem during the last held examinations.

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE In Kasem Paper One (1)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) A good number of candidates provided detailed accounts on their chosen essay topics.

(2) Candidates provided very good or suitable alternative responses to the comprehension questions.

(3) Most of the candidates were very conversant with the features of letter-writing.

(4) Paragraphing was well managed by most of the candidates. Candidates organized their ideas coherently.

(5) Candidates provided suitable titles for their chosen topics.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(1) Poor spellings – Candidates’ spellings continue to be quite appalling. Even some words correctly found in the question paper were wrongly spelt in the candidates’ scripts.

(2) Poor punctuations – Some candidates failed to use punctuation marks appropriately.

(3) Dirty work in scripts – Some candidates incidentally make their work dirty by unnecessary cancellations. It was really difficult to read and comprehend some of their responses since the cancellation has affected some of the words.

(4) Some of the candidates used wrong tenses in their answers, especially in the essays and the translation.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

  1. Teachers should guide candidates to read more books in the language to improve upon their spelling and expression. They should point out the punctuation marks to students as they read and explain their uses to them.
  2. Candidates should be advised to neatly cross out wrong words and re-write the correct words above the cancelled words or on a fresh lines or space. Multiple cancellations and or erasures render the work dirty and difficult to read.
  3. Teachers should give more drills and assignments on tense to improve candidates grammar.
  4. Candidates should desist from obliterating their letters in their scripts; as such acts render their work dirty.

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE In Kasem Paper One (1)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) The lengths of most of the candidates’ essays were up to the required number of words.

(2) Some candidates were able to supply suitable titles to their chosen topics, using capital letters.

(3) A good number of the candidates provided valid responses to the questions.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(1) Candidates seemed to have no knowledge of the mechanics of writing and the appropriate use of punctuation marks. There were instances where candidates began sentences and even proper nouns with small letters.

(2) Some candidates’ spelling was quite appalling. Even some words correctly spelt in the question paper were wrongly written by some of the candidates.

(3) Some candidates make their work untidy by unnecessary cancellations; letters were re-written within the cancelled words. It was difficult and frustrating reading some of the answers written in this manner since the cancellation effaced some of the words.

(4) Some candidates exhibited ignorance of the phonetics and phonology of the language.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Teachers should pay more attention to lessons on the mechanics of writing and punctuation.

(2) Candidates should be encouraged to read well-written materials to serve as a guide to correct spelling and punctuation; at least they can make use of the Kasem orthography as a guide.

(3) Candidates should be advised to desist from the practice of trying to efface words written in ink with erasers and instead cancel the words and re-write them in new spaces, as the attempt to erase the writings render their work dirty and difficult to read

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE In Kasem Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

  1. Candidates exhibited fair knowledge of the demands of the questions and produced good answers.
  2. Their mechanical accuracy was also good.
  3. Candidates showed their strengths in the areas of customs and institutions and some aspects of the prose and drama.
  4. A good number of candidates were able to answer the questions fully.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

  1. The orthography and spellings were a very big challenge to candidates.
  2. Candidates exhibited very low knowledge in dirges.
  3. There were some candidates who simply listed points without expanding them.
  4. Candidates exhibited very little knowledge in the area of poetry. Identifying literary devices used in the poem was a problem. They could not explain how those devices enhanced understanding and beauty of the poem.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

  1. To help candidates to improve upon students’ writing, teachers should take students through drills and also teach them how to write the various types of sentences and to develop paragraphs.
  2. Students should be taught the various dirges in Kasem.
  3. Students should read widely to improve on their language skills and reduce grammatical/syntactical errors in their writing.
  4. Teachers are also encouraged to take students through poetry appreciation and discuss the poems  thoroughly so as to help them overcome the problem.

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE In Kasem Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) Candidates demonstrated fair knowledge of the requirement of the questions, especially in the aspects of customs and institutions.

(2) Candidates’ mechanical accuracy was also good, as there was much improvement over that of the previous year.

(3) Candidates’ appreciation of the literature aspect, especially the prose, has a tremendous improvement.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES.

(1) Spelling and construction of good sentences still posed a challenge to most of the candidates.

(2) Candidates had difficulty in appreciating the poetry aspect of literature.

(3) Understanding the demands of the questions was still a problem for some candidates. For example, they merely listed points where they were required to discuss them.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Teachers should take candidates through the orthography of the language. They should also teach them how to construct good sentences.

(2) Teachers should take candidates through how to appreciate poetry.

(3) Teachers should use past questions papers to explain the rubrics to candidates before they sit the main WASSCE.
