WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Geography And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report For WASSCE 2023 Geography
Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Geography during the last held examination.
WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Geography Paper Two (2)
A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS
(1) Some candidates presented good map outlines and correctly located the landmarks required of them.
(2) Majority of the candidates were able to outline the factors which are responsible for high population density in a country.
(3) Most candidates were able to outline the contributions of the forest vegetation to the economy of Africa.
B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
(1) A number of candidates could not explain the ways in which urban settlements depend on rural settlements.
(2) Majority of the candidates could not highlight the problems created by the tourism industry in developing countries.
(3) Although good map outlines were drawn by candidates, a number of them did not provide the key for the maps which makes it difficult to interpret and score
C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES
(1) Teachers should highlight during instructional sessions the interdependence between urban and rural settlements to enable students explain how urban settlements depend on rural settlements.
(2) With appropriate examples, teachers should explain to candidates the problems created by the tourism industry in developing countries.
(3) Candidates should to provide keys when outline maps are drawn for easy interpretation of features indicated on the map
WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE Geography Paper Three (3)
A. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS
(1) Majority of the candidates able to define environmental balance and explain water cycle with the aid of a diagram.
(2) Candidates were able to come out with examples of landforms associated with coastal erosion.
(3) Most candidates were able to calculate the time, day and date based on the given longitudes in the question.
(4) Majority of the candidates were able to outline the differences sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
B. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
(1) Most candidates could not draw and label well the diagram which was required in the description of the mode of formation of a laccolith.
(2) Majority of the candidates were not able to draw the annotated cross profile along the line A – B.
(3) Majority of the candidates could not explain how altitude, distance, slope and aspect affect the temperature of a place.
C SUGGESTED REMEDIES
(1) Teachers should give candidates more exercises on geomorphology topics to enable them practice the diagrams that are associated with the major landforms.
(2) Teachers are encouraged to give students more exercises on annotated cross profile to enable them practice frequently.
(3) Teachers should explain using appropriate examples the factors that affect the temperature of a place.
WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE Geography Paper Two (2)
A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS
The Chief Examiner for Geography 2 identified the following topics as strengths of candidates:
(1) Problems limiting the development of Plantation Agriculture in West Africa and solutions to the problems;
(2) Functions of cities and factors that favour the growth of settlements;
(3) The importance of rainforest vegetation to the economy of Ghana.
B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES:
The following were identified as the weaknesses of candidates:
(1) Most candidates could not identify the problems hindering the development of seaports in Ghana;
(2) The candidates could not name sources of thermal and renewable energy in Ghana and could not suggest solutions to the problems hindering the development of thermal energy in Ghana as well;
(3) Candidates could not locate and name the human and physical features in the sketched map of Ghana and Africa.
C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES TO THE WEAKNESSES
Remedies for improvement in the performance of candidates should include:
(1) Candidates should devote time to the reading of relevant literature to enrich understanding of topics;
(2) Geography 2 teachers should give enough tuition on problems hindering the development of sea ports in Ghana;
(3) Further explanation on sources of thermal energy in Ghana and renewable energy should be given to candidates.
WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE Geography Paper Three (3)
A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTH
The Chief Examiner for Geography 3 identified the following areas as strengths of candidates this year:
(1) Construction of divergent bar graphs;
(2) Factors that affect climate, and characteristics of Equatorial climate.
(3) Definition of pollution, sources of pollutants and effect of atmospheric pollution
B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES:
The Chief Examiner for Geography 3 identified the following as weaknesses of candidates:
(1) Some of the candidates have difficulty drawing the cross profile along the specified lines.
(2) Some candidates could not highlight the differences and similarities between alluvial fan and delta.
C SUGGESTED REMEDIES TO THE WEAKNESSES
Remedies for subsequent improvement of performance should include:
(1) Candidates should devote time to the reading of relevant literature to enrich understanding of topics in their subject areas.
(2) Teachers should give enough tuition on cross section drawing and to highlight the differences and similarities between alluvial fan and delta
