GES makes student travel 7hours to receive Ghc200 as an Award.

The Ghana Education Service usually awards candidates who performed creditably well during any set of examinations. Students are awarded for excellent performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as well as the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The Ghana Education Service awards candidates usually at the national level. But also, the service also awards candidates at other levels, like the best regional and district. The case for the best candidate in the Gushegu district is considered a bit ridiculous. The candidates were made to travel 7hours to receive Ghc200. The revelation was made via an online portal with a short description below:

Abdul-Latif Fawei was named the best student in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the Gushegu district after the results came in 2022.

According to reports, some officials of the Ghana Education Service(GES) in the Gushegu District made a student from the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD UBIDS) travel just to collect GHc200 for being the best WASSCE student in his time.

Though the value of the award may be more than the Ghc200 cash award, the travel distance has over shadowed the award scheme. The award provides public bragging rights. The award also provides an opportunity to easily access future scholarship opportunities that may be available in the future.

Since the cash award received may not be enough to cater for the travelling cost of the recipient, the Ghana Education Service is encouraged to factor travelling cost into any of such future awards scheme.
