WASSCE Candidates’ Weaknesses In Nzema And Remedies | Extract From Chief Examiners Report Towards WASSCE 2023 Nzema

Teachers preparing students for any examination are always worried about the potential weaknesses in answers that their students will provide during the examination. Fortunately, the main examining body, the West Africa Examination Council always provide WASSCE candidates’ weaknesses in Nzema during the last held examinations.

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE In Nzema Paper One (1)

A. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRANGTHS

Most candidates made efforts to answer all the required questions and they also exhibited a good understanding of the questions.

Candidates generally wrote good essays with appropriate figures of speech, idiomatic expressions and appropriate registers. Ideas were also orderly presented.

 

B. A SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

Poor performance in the mechanics of the language continue to affect the progress of most candidates.

A lot of them scored zero mark for the mechanical accuracy aspect of the essay owing to wrong spellings, wrong grammer, wrong use of punctuation mark and wrong use of small and capital letters.

A few candidates exhibited evidence of poor preparation towards the exam by copying extracts from the question paper as their essays.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

Teachers should encourage students to read extensively to improve their language skills. More exercises should also be given to students in respect of spellings, grammar, punctuation and capitalization.

Candidates must be prepared adequately to approach the exam with confidence in order to avoid the copying of the comprehension passage and other extracts from the question paper as their essays.

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE In Nzema Paper One (1)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

(1) Candidates gave detailed narrations using good grammar, idiomatic expressions and well-thought-out points.

(2) Candidates were able to organize their answers in a very good manner.

(3) Ideas and arguments were presented in coherent manner.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

(1) Wrong spellings and faulty use of some punctuation marks.

(2) Wrong use of the upper and lower cases.

(3) Some candidates failed to read and understand the rubrics before attempting to answer.

(4) Some candidates copied the whole comprehension passage and others lifted portions of it to compose their essays.

(5) Few candidates were not able to give appropriate captions to the given passage.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Teachers should teach all aspects of the language.

(2) Give copious exercises, especially in grammar and dictation.

(3) Parents and teachers should encourage their wards to read widely.

(4) Teachers should help students to develop interest in the Ghanaian language

 

WAEC Summary of 2021 WASSCE In Nzema Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS

  1. Generally, candidates performed better in the oral literature and prose sections of the paper.
  2. A good a number of the candidates were able to discuss the points they gave as demanded by some of the questions and they were accordingly rewarded.
  3. With respect to the written literature, a good number of the candidates were able to  state the theme of the poem and also identifed correctly literary expressions they were expected to identify and discuss as demanded by the paper.
  4. Some of the candidates were impressive; they gave mature and coherent responses.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES.

  1. Most of the candidates failed to explain the points they gave as demanded by some of the  questions; they had difficulty in differentiating between the expressions, kile  (State/mention) and kilehile nu /ka nwolɛ edwɛkɛ (Discuss).
  2. Generally, the question on poetry appreciation was poorly handled by the candidates. They  were not able to appreciate the poem based on the features expected – diction, number of stanzas and lines in each sentence structure, rhyming scheme, sound patten, repetition, literary devices etc.

 

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

  1. Teachers should teach students the techniques of answering questions and give them many  exercises.
  2. Teachers are entreated to continue teaching their students the techniques of poetry appreciation.
  3. They should also give many exercises, mark them and discuss wth them. Students shortcomings so as to overcome the challenge.
  4. Teachers should motivate their students to develop the love for reading Nzema literature.
  5. Teachers should advise their candidates to study the questions carefully before they attempt answering them so that they are be able to meet the demands of the questions they select.

 

WAEC Summary of 2020 WASSCE In Nzema Paper Two (2)

A. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ STRENGTHS.

(1) Candidates performed better in the oral literature and prose components of the paper.

(2) Candidates were able to dilate on the points they used in answering the questions.

(3) A good number of the candidates were able to state the theme of the poem and also identify correctly literary expressions they were expected to identify.

(4) Candidates displayed a sense of comfortability with the customs and institutions of their traditions.

(5) They easily itemized and discussed thoroughly the functions of a chief.

 

B. SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES.

(1) Generally, the question on poetry appreciation was poorly answered. The candidates were not able to appreciate the poem based on the features expected – number of stanzas and lines in each, sentence structure, rhyming scheme, sound pattern, repetition, literary devices etc.

(2) Some responses on the written literature questions especially on the context questions showed that, the set books were not studied.

(3) Inability to identify events surrounding a statement made by an interlocutor.

(4) Inability of some candidates to discuss the themes of the prose and drama and appreciate the mood of the authors.

(5) Candidates sometimes gave riddles instead of proverbs.

C. SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Teachers are encouraged to teach their students the techniques of poetry appreciation.

(2) Teachers should encourage the candidates to read the set books.

(3) The books should be dramatized in class for more understanding.

(4) Candidates should be encouraged to develop interest in the Ghanaian language.

(5) Teachers should lay emphasis on literally devices
