Top 10 Lessons learned from the book SHOE DOG

The book SHOE DOG, a memoir by Phil Knight, engages readers about how to perceive and execute their tasks. The book expects people to consider the journey as more important than the destination

1.) Journey is always more important than the destination.

Phil Knight compares his life to jogging very early on in the book. We jog for pure enjoyment. We keep moving forward mile after mile even though we have no idea why we are running. He also implemented this exact method at his company. He always valued the trip more than the destination.

2.) Beginning is the toughest part

All beginnings are frightening. Starting something new entails transformation, and transformation entails stepping outside of one’s comfort zone. However, the majority of dreams fail because the dreamer lacks the drive to push through the first activation energy and take the first step, not because the dream has no potential. But nothing can be done unless the first step is taken. One of the book’s well-known phrases captures this theme.

3.) Don’t micro-manage
“Don’t tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and let them surprise you with the results” — Patton. Throughout the novel, this specific quote appears numerous times. The person who adhered to this concept to the letter was Phil Knight. He never readily offered his staff words of support, but he always allowed them total creative freedom.

4.) Do 1 task at a time

The to-do list can be overwhelmingly large. This is especially true for all start-ups. According to Phil Knight, the best way to survive these days is to first immerse yourself completely in one task and then move on to the next. In this way, even trivial tasks such as finding office space can be more exciting.

5.) It’s not always about the money.

Of course, a company needs money to survive, just like how our body needs blood to survive. And just like us humans, a company too needs a purpose. By the way, this analogy was given by Phil Knight himself. For him, in the beginning, it was all simple: winning meant not losing. But once his company crossed its beginning hurdle, it was time for both Phil Knight and Nike to redefine winning. It had to be something more than money, like wanting to create and contribute!

6.) The goal was always quality.

Perhaps one of the biggest reasons Nike was able to beat other competitions was its constant focus on quality and innovation. Knight and his team were always looking for ways to improve the quality of their products, rather than making many substandard shoes at low prices. Knight himself took days to break the shoes apart and assembled them himself to understand what would work.

7.) Make a Great Team

Phil explains that much of his success is due to the excellence of his team. Surrounded by superstars in all disciplines and disciplines, he was able to create excellent shoes and great advertising campaigns. Knight makes a special mention of some employees in his book, acknowledging most of the company’s overall success.

8.) “Fake It” ‘Till You Make It

Much of Knight’s previous victories came from the confidence he exuded when he met people with far more power and money than he did. He had to go to the conference room with many experienced businessmen or borrow a huge amount of money several times to get to the top. He pretended to be successful and achieved those victories … and he finally succeeded.

9.) Travel the World When You’re Young

Phil Knight believes that traveling the world in his early twenties has brought him great benefits in terms of both his general world wisdom and knowledge. He recommends that anyone who has the means should spend time in other countries to gain knowledge and experience before settling on their main job.

10.) Never Give Up on your dream

Last but not the least, Knight knows the advice is exaggerated, but at first he struggled and found it very, almost impossible and difficult to keep his business alive. Therefore, Knight advises that those who take on serious challenges and efforts should never give up until they succeed and never see the challenges.
