Teachers Tier 2 Pension In Trouble Again After First Using It For 1T1L

Highlights

1. The tier 2 pension scheme of Ghana Education Service staff is under the management of Ghana Education Service Occupational Pension Scheme (GESOPS).

2. The tier 2 scheme of Ghana Education Service staff has been used for the controversial One Teacher One Laptop initiative to provide laptops for teachers in the country since the year 2021.

3. Even though the laptops are yet to be delivered to a large section of the teachers a year after funds had been from their salary, different from the use of their pension funds as loan to the goverment, to cover the teachers’ components of funding cost.

4. GESOPS, Ghana Education Service Occupational Pension Scheme, managers of tier 2 pension funds for workers in the Ghana Education Service, has been fingered for another controversial spending of the teachers’ tier 2 pension funds.

5. GESOPS is alleged to have been involved in the sponsorship of this year’s teacher prize awards held in Tamale in October 2022 which ended up providing a brand new car to the eventual winner.

6. Even though it could be argued that the sponsorship of the Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony is a corporate social responsibility, questions remain as to whether GESOPS acted on their own or they were compelled or even with appropriate corporate governance guidelines.

7. Another question will be how such a sponsorship would add to the value of funds retiring Ghana Education Service staff will go home with.
