Scam alert in Ghana: Scam is simply a dishonest scheme or a fraud scheme that is intended to swindle another person. Many people need prompt to prevent scammers from defrauding them.

 

We have, therefore, set-up this database to provide a scam alert database for the general public. This scam alert database is expected to prompt people when they are about to be defrauded.

*G-money scam with ayoba

A team of fraudsters are currently clearing the accounts of G-money holders. The fraudsters are using a simple but complex scheme to defraud their victims.  However, this scam alert should save the public.

 

The scammers will, first of all, send a message with a customized name as ‘G-money’. The scammers will send the ordinary message that they have sent an amount of money to the victim by mistake.

 

But the customers could believe the message is actually coming from the operators of G-money. This is because the message will deliver with customized ‘G-money’ name.

 

The scammers will then try to convince suspicious or unconvinced customers. And they will also further confuse the already convinced customers beyond a scam alert.

 

The fraudsters will later send a ‘code’ to the G-money customer using a customized ‘ayoba’ name.

 

The two messages would appear unrelated to the customer. Finally, the fraudsters will call the customer to demand for the ‘code’ that is sent with ‘ayoba’ name.

 

The scammers in Ghana will clear the G-money account of the customer the moment the customer provides the supposed unrelated ‘ayoba’ code. Below are the two messages that the scammers in Ghana are sending to their victims.

 

First message: ‘Payment received for Ghc505 from 148318 VICTORIA VENTURES your merchant I (148318) withdrawal code (3990) reference G-money TRANSACTION fee 0.00 ID:2015561708 G-money reference’

 

Second message: ‘4117 is your ayoba validation code: Don’t share this code with anyone’

Members of the general public are encouraged to use this scam alert as a guide to protect themselves and their love ones.

*Ghana card updates scam

The National Communications Authority (NCA) released a scam alert to the general public due to numerous enquiries it received.

 

Members of the public reached out to the NCA to authenticate a scam message that is being sent to people. However, the NCA stated that the message is a scam. Below is the message that fraudsters are sending to members of the public.

 

“Your number is shortlisted for blocking by NCA. Verify/ update your Ghana card via android app https://cutt.ly/SIMREG”

The NCA, therefore, issued a scam alert to the general public. The message from the NCA read:

 

“This message is not from the NCA. Do not click on the link.

 

If you have registered your sim, your number will not be blocked”.

* GCB Bank Ghana card scam

Scammers are currently using the name of GCB Bank to defraud customers of the bank. The scam is designed around the need to link Ghana card to GCB Bank accounts. Below is the message being sent to customers of GCB Bank to defraud them.

 

“Dear Customer, you are kindly reminded to link your Ghana Card to your GCB Bank account. Please visit any GCB Bank Branch or website to update your records.

 

For further information, please contact 0800422422/0302681531. GCB your bank for life”

 

The message above looks very official. And the message could even contain the official contact of the bank.

 

However, the scammers will send a follow-up message which is intended to achieve their actual goal to scam the customer. The message below is their follow-up message.

 

“Dear customer , please note that all services on your account will be deactivated on 20th June, 2023 if not validated. An agent will be with you shortly to assist your link your Ghana card, ATM ,VISA Card and the mastercard to your GCB account, thank you.”

 

The scammers will follow up this message above with a call to innocent customers. A customer without any scam alert may fall victim.

 

Working mechanism of the scammers

First of all, the scammers will configure their phone numbers to appear as the name of GCB Bank when you receive the messages.

 

Also, the scammers will use the name of GCB Bank to register with the True-caller app. Therefore, any attempt to verify the phone number using a true-caller app will provide a false identity of the scammers.

 

Their intention is to make the customer believe that the messages are from official channels of the bank.

 

This is the reason why the first message will be sent, which may contain the official contact of the bank before the second message and the phone calls will follow in that order. A customer needs a prompt sometimes in a form of scam alert to avoid being duped.

 

What to do in such cases

Verifying any official communication from GCB Bank that needs you to provide any confidential information is easy. This will provide the scam alert that a customer needs.

 

First of all, visit the official website of the bank to pick their official contact numbers for verification.

 

Secondly, GCB Bank has a live-chat support on the official website of the bank. Customers can therefore chat live with staff of the bank to confirm any information or otherwise from the bank.

 

GCB Bank Disclaimer

Our team have contacted the officials of GCB Bank through the official channels of the bank. The response is that the message requesting customers to link their Ghana card to their banks as well a need for an agent to contact customers is a scam. Below are the response from the bank that confirmed the scam alert.

 

“Kindly disregard such messages as they are from fraudulent sources.

GCB Bank is not going to deactivate your account within the deadline provided.

Also note that if you are using any debit card, be it Mastercard or visa card, the card is already linked to your account and so you will not have to link it again.

If you have not linked your Ghana card to your bank account, however, you may follow the link below to our website to link your Ghana card to your account ”

 

Customers who are unable to verify any scam alert can resort to physical visit to the bank for confirmation.
