Over 110 Teachers Demoted | GNAT President Disclosed
According to the president of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Rev. Isaac Owusu, over 110 teachers were demoted last year. Demotions in the Ghana Education Service are not news. In fact, it has been in existence since time immemorial. It is actually captured as one of the punitive measures by the service. However, some headteachers were demoted for trying to do the right thing for their learners in the midst of national budgetary challenges.
At a time when budgetary releases for core activities for the Ghana Education Service is facing a lot of issues, some headteachers decided to take the bull by the horns to ask learners to pay tokens for the purposes of printing examination papers for the learners. However, the initiative turned out to be an albatross around the neck of the headteachers of those schools. The headteachers were demoted from their roles. Rev. Isaac Owusu disclosed this on Joynews’ PM express discussion on Wednesday 1st February 2023.

The program, which was hosted by Evans Mensah, sought to highlight the challenges in the education sector, especially the lack of tables and chairs for learners in the most deprived areas of the country.
Despite the disclosure of the demotion by the president of the largest teachers’ union in the country, the president did not disclose what his outfit did about the situation.
It is surprising the very reason the headteachers were demoted, which is the fact that they were only trying to solve a problem for the good of their learners. Even though the option given to the schools in such situations was to write questions on the black board for the learners to answer, it also clear, the problem seem to have no end in sight and probably the reason the headteachers decided to ask learners to pay the amounts for printing of the papers.
