New Director-General May Not Go. Mr. Apaak disclosed the three possible outcomes of ongoing meeting

Teaser 1: There are three possible outcomes of the ongoing meeting between the three teachers’ unions and government officials over the strike action concerning the appointment of the new Director-General. He may not go after all.

Teaser 2: A choice between one person being at post or over eight (8) million students suffering. Tough call.

Highlights

1. Teachers in Ghana have been on industrial strike over the appointment of a new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, which they disagree with.

2. Thomas Musah, the general secretary of the largest teachers’ union in the country, GNAT, in a live television discussion provided a hint which could end the strike and teachers asked to resume work tomorrow, 7th November, 2022

3. In a television discussion with TV3 today, 6th November, 2022, Thomas Musah disclosed that their last meeting with government officials was to lay down their demands as usual for any negotiation, which they expect a response from government officials today at a meeting scheduled at 2:00pm.

4. According to the general secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), a favourable response from the government’s team today would definitely mean the strike is over and teachers must resume work tomorrow.

5. Thomas Musah used the opportunity to clarify that the teachers’ unions and members are not against any individual, specifically Dr. Eric Nkansah, who was appointed and caused the strike, but rather the strike is a matter of principle

6. The strike action continuing tomorrow will therefore be determined by a response by the government to the demands that were laid before the government during their last meeting on Friday 4th November, 2022.

7. Mr. Apaak, the Chairman of the Parliamentary select committee on Education in Parliament, however, disclosed that there are three possible outcomes to be expected after today’s meeting, which are:

a. the appointment of the new Director-General is revoked and the strike action by the teachers ends or

b. the appointment of the new Director-General is maintained and the strike action by the teachers continues for over eight (8) million learners will suffer or

c. a compromise will be reached between the teachers and government for the teachers to resume work while the new Director-General remains at post
