Jealous But Don’t Mock Dr. Yaw Twerefour, Newly Appointed CEO of Mortuaries And Funeral Facility Agency

Prez. Akufo-Addo has appointed Dr. Yaw Twerefour as the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA).

His appointment, which was made in accordance with Article 195(1) of the 1992 constitution and Section 100(1) of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act 2011 (Act 829), will see him managing the licensing, control and regulation of facilities connected with the storage, transportation and disposal of human remains, according to UTV

The announcement of Dr. Yaw Twerefour was met with mockery among citizens. Some of the mockery which are expressed in disgust seen to wonder why such a portfolio will be created at a time the country’s wage bill is under scrutiny.

Worth noting is the fact that Ghanaians are mocking the new Chief Executive Officer in town for the job he is appointed to do. Dead people now have a CEO.

The question some Ghanaians are asking is whether mortuary facilities in the country are going to be run by the agency while all mortuaries are attached to hospitals and health facilities.

It is yet to be seen whether the mortuaries and funeral facilities agency is going to run parallel to the hospital and health facilities that own mortuaries in the country.

Also, there have been calls for the government to cut expenditure instead of the brutal domestic debt restructuring that is ongoing and taking pensioners to ransom.

Why Ghanaians should be jealous but not mock the mortuary CEO

Some government portfolios do not look lucrative in the eyes of the public. However, executives appointed to manage such portfolios enjoy the position on the blind side of everyone. Such scenarios present less financial pressure for government appointees from their constituents. In fact, some government appointees even lobby for such less fancy roles while even rejecting the supposed lucrative roles as perceived by the public.

Examples of very lucrative roles that the public do not notice

Being a minister of state is a role most Ghanaians would point to as very lucrative. Therefore, when the late Sir John was appointed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the forestry commission, he was considered overlooked by the president in his appointments. Apart from very few people who knew being the head of the forestry commission was a big deal, the majority of the populace sometimes used Sir John as an example of party folks who get rejected after toiling for their party to come to power.

The whole story was reversed when Sir John unfortunately passed on and the details of his will leaked. Apparently, Sir John was having a lot of fun in the forest with galamsryers. Sir John even had the opportunity to give part of Achimota forest to his relations in his will.

There are other roles, such as being a chief executive officer of other state institutions instead of being in the front line position of government, that attract a lot of remuneration. Hardly will citizens refer to the CEO of NHIS, cylinder company, NIA, metro mass etc as the first example of government appointees as privileged appointees.

Conclusion

The portfolio of Dr. Yaw Twerefour, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Mortuaries and Funerals agencies, should rather be examined by citizens. The new CEO in town would rather be envied instead of being mocked. In the absence of any real work, he is sure to be on the board of major hospital facilities in the country. A portion of the internally generated funds from the operation of mortuaries in all hospitals in the country will need to be sent to mortuaries and funeral facilities agency. The process of approving mortuaries in the country will need to pass through the agency.

The agency is responsible for licensing, controlling and regulation of facilities connected with the storage, transportation and disposal of human remains. The functions of the agency are lucrative enough to generate enough revenue from a sector that is infinite in nature. We will all die some day and the agency will definitely play a role.
