Simple Activity Ideas For Teaching Maths Topics

Mathematics tends to be taught without substantial activity. However, there are some simple activity ideas for teaching Maths Topics in a way that learners will very much appreciate the topic and retain the content. Here are some activity ideas for teaching the following topics:

1. Algebraic expressions:

• Practice the following:

❖ Twice a certain or two times a number

❖ Let any variable represent the unknown, say X

❖ Now write it algebraically, 2 times X

❖ 2x

✓ A number plus 5

✓ Represent the unknown with a variable of your choice.

Let’s say M is the unknown. Please emphasize the unknown variable

✓ M + 5

▪ Riddle Riddle, Kofi is X years old, and the father is four times as kofi’s age. Write

an expression of his father’s age.

Kofi = X

Father = 4 times Kofi

= 4X

• Expression Building: Provide students with a set of algebraic terms (e.g. x, y, 2, 3, +, -) and

have them work in pairs to build expressions using the terms. This can be turned into a

competition where the team with the most expressions wins.

• Expression Match-up: Create a set of cards with algebraic expressions on one side and their

simplified form on the other. Students can work individually or in groups to match up the

expressions with their simplified forms.

2. The gradient of a line:

• Line Drawing: Provide students with graph paper and have them draw lines with different

gradients. Then, they can calculate the gradient of each line using the rise-over-run formula.

• Gradient Hunt: Provide students with a set of pictures with lines of varying gradients hidden

within them. Students can hunt for the lines and calculate their gradients.

3. Alternate and corresponding angles:

• Angle Identification: Provide students with a set of pictures with angles labeled. Students can

work in pairs or groups to identify alternate and corresponding angles and explain why they

are so.

• Angle Drawing: Provide students with a set of angles and have them draw the alternate and

corresponding angles. This can be turned into a game where students race to draw the angles correctly

These activities can be modified to suit different age groups and learning styles. By using hands-on activities, students will have a better understanding of the topics and will be more engaged in the learning process.
