GES Goes After Schools Issuing Unapproved Prospectus For SHS 1 Students

Fresh students started reporting to various Senior High Schools in the country from 20th February 2023. The students started reporting after their placement in the schools through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System less than a week before the reporting date. Unfortunately, the students, parents and guardians met an unexpected prospectus given to them by the schools. From the onset of the free SHS since the year 2023, parents and wards have become conditioned to the level of prospectus they have to obtain to enrol in school as first timers. However, the level of prospectus given to the students this year is considered by some as a review by the free Senior High Schools in the country by the heads of schools themselves without an official review of the policy. This level of prospectus is what the management of the Ghana Education Service has described as an unapproved prospectus for SHS 1 students.

There were reports earlier about the various schemes several senior high schools in the country are using to collect money from students. Some of such reported schemes include full payment of PTA dues for the academic year and the conversion of tools needed into cash for students to pay, as well as other schemes. The Ghana Education Service considers some of the schemes as illegal. The service has therefore indicated its intention to act and deal with schools and/ or staff who participate in any scheme that demands unapproved money from the students and parents. In a press release by the Ghana Education Service, part of the statement disclosed “…….Management of the Ghana Education Service takes strong exception to this practice, and wishes to state unequivocally that the practice is prohibited and must cease with immediate effect.

Investigations will soon commence into the issues to ensure that the right
things are done in our schools. Heads of Second Cycle Schools are therefore,
cautioned to stick to the approved harmonised prospectus for students. Any
Head of School caught demanding any item(s) aside the approved ones will
be severely sanctioned.”

It has come to the attention of the management of the Ghana Education Service that some Heads of Second Cycle Institutions are issuing unapproved prospectus and also selling some of the items on the prospectus to form students who report to their schools for admission. Some heads are also selling free items that are supplied by the government to the students.

Parents and Guardians should be allowed to buy the approved items on the prospectus from the open market and not in the schools to avoid any conflict of interest on the part of school authorities.
