How To Read ECG Meter In Ghana | 2023

Electricity bill payment is one of the conflicting points for people sharing the same electricity meter. To compound the situation is the inability of tenants to read ECG meters correctly. The calculation of bills, therefore, is a mystery to many and preserved for the utility company’s staff. Even with that, some sections of the utility company’s staff are also unable to read their own meter, making it problematic when such staff are stopped by tenants to explain certain details.

To address the issue of confusion and conflict among tenants due to electricity bills, we have provided a guide here on how to read ECG meter.

Meter reading guidelines

First of all, it must be noted that the electricity meter reads in only one direction. That is, the meter starts reading from one (1) and continues counting in a positive direction to virtually infinity (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, …).

Reading the electricity meter is thereby a matter of finding out how many units you have added for the current month. To do that

a. The last reading for the last month is taken Eg. Nine (9) is the number read on the meter when the utility company’s staff comes to pick up the reading.

b. Then, when the utility company’s staff come the current month, the number on the meter is a reading of 16 on the meter.

c. to find the units consumed for the current month, the last number reading is subtracted from the current number reading on the meter. That is 16 – 9 = 7. Therefore, the number of units consumed for the month is 7 units.

Bill calculation

Unlike before, the new method used by the electricity company to find how much to pay for units consumed is simply multiplying the number of units consumed by the rate of one unit. The current rate for one unit is Ghc0.8904. In addition, service charges and national electrification levy are also added. These fees and charges are a little meagre. Therefore, the bill for the 7 units of electricity consumed is 7 x Ghc0.8904 = Ghc6.23

It must also be stated the number of digits on the electricity meter electricity meter for reading the meter is six (6) digits, but the last one is a decimal point (that is 00000.0) and the sixth digit (decimal) is not involved in the meter reading. So, depending on the age of the meter, the reading could include all digits or only the first few ones. No matter the digits involved in the reading of the meter, the final answer will be the same. For example, if 10529 is the last reading and 10536, the number of reads will still be 7 units (10536 – 10529 = 7)
