4 Negative Effects Of Transfer On Your Career

There are pros and cons to every action. Humans, as rational as we are, will make sure the positive effects of our actions are more than the negative. Negative effects of transfer on people’s career are also glaring.

When an individual did not identify all the negative and all the positive effects of their action before taking a decision, such a decision could end up being an irrational decision.

We have therefore analysed three major negative effects of taking or requesting a transfer to new stations on the career of an individual, especially in public sector work.

1. Retro net effect or surcharging of the worker: The government of Ghana has a policy where workers receiving unearned salary are surcharged to retrieve such funds. Though the surcharge can take several forms, the common surcharge is where workers who were receiving extra responsibility allowance at their former stations but have no extra duty at the station are asked to refund any unearned pay during the process of salary transfers. Since most salary transfers take more than six (6) months to effect, the worker would be asked to refund the pay taken within the six (6) as extra responsibility or even for more months if the process took more than six (6) months.

2. Lack of opportunity for extra responsibility: Every institution would have people tasked with various roles, including all extra responsibilities before the arrival of the worker on transfer to the new station. The implication is that workers on transfer would have to wait at least a year before the re-scheduling of responsibilities, which could include the staff on transfer at the new station.

3. No extra responsibility for at least a year: Due to the fact that most schedules are assigned before the arrival of the staff on transfer and there is no opportunity for the staff to be assigned any extra responsibility that qualifies for extra responsibility allowance. Workers on transfer do not only refund an extra responsibility allowance being received before their transfer, but also, such staff do not have the opportunity to be paid an extra responsibility allowance.

4. Workers get delayed in their careers. Staff who have stayed at their previous stations for a long time will have schedules in the old station which give them advantage in per sue of higher levels of career advancement in the future. However, due to transfers to new stations which do not offer them the same role as their former stations means such staff are re-starting from behind.
