1T1L Monies Deducted Can Not Be Traced | Extract from initial response from GESOPS

1T1L monies deducted from the total number of teachers who were more than the contracted number of computers to be supplied can not be traced. The observation was taken from the initial response provided by the Ghana Education Service Occupational Pension Scheme to eight (8) teachers who demanded the information under the Rights To Information law.

Highlights

1. Teacher unions and the government of Ghana engaged KA Technologies to supply 280,000 laptops to teachers in the country.

2. Teachers were required to pay 30% of the cost of the laptops.

3. The 30% cost components that teachers were to cater for were deducted from source on payroll

4. Interestingly, the monies were deducted from the total number of teachers who were more than the contracted 280,000 laptops that needed to be supplied.

5. The Director General at the time released a statement that the excess deductions would be kept in an Escrow Bank Account that would yield interest and to be able to procure the laptops for the excess number of teachers.

6. It is this Escrow Bank Account that eight (8) teachers demanded to know the status of the account.

Details

GESOPS referred to the question posed by the eight (8) teachers as stated below.

“In the same letter dated 26th October 2021, the Director General of GES called for the opening of an Escrow Account that will yield interest. Kindly provide the bank statement of the Escrow Account and documents that show the performance of the Escrow Account since it was opened”

The Ghana Education Service Occupational Pension Scheme provided the response as:

“The said Escrow Account was not opened and therefore there is no bank statement to share”

The question that most teachers are asking is the whereabouts of the 1T1L monies deducted from the total number of teachers, who were more than the contracted number of computers that must be supplied.
