Status Of Base Pay Negotiations As At 21st December, 2022, According To Citi Eyewitness News [What Next?]

1. The base pay salary negotiation for public sector workers for the 2023 financial years continues to produce lots of drama from its onset.

2. First is the fact that the meetings for the negotiations were initiated one week before the presentation of the 2023 national to parliament.

3. The fast forward was also the fact that both labour unions and the government could not agree on any percentage increase for salary increase before the budget was finally presented.

4. The government, in an attempt to obtain an idea about how much salary increase will be effected in 2023, continues to engage labour unions after the presentation of the budget and before the year ends.

5. Interesting enough is also the fact that core members of the government’s negotiation team could not form a quorum at the last scheduled meeting on Monday, 20th December, 2022, according to Citi Eyewitness News.

In a Citi Eyewitness News interview with the deputy minister for employment and labour relations who was absent himself, the deputy minister revealed most members of the government’s negotiation team were absent because they had equally very important engagement in parliament which demanded their attention as well, probably because sections of the government’s budget were about to be rejected by parliament.

7. When queried about when the next meeting would be called, he answered that labour unions would be properly invited for the next meeting, implying there is currently no definite date for the next negotiations meeting.
