GNAT Local Conferences Slated For February. School Reps Encouraged To Demand Voting Rights To Elect National Executives As Resolution

1. A time of accountability for the local areas of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is yet again around the corner.

2. The union, GNAT, which has been in existence for about 91 years, has a delegate system of electing its officers at all levels.

3. Despite the existence of the delegate system over the years, scores of members, who are over 21,000 members on Telegram (Advert: Click here to join ALL GNAT MEMBERS on One Telegram Platform), believe the current delegate system must be expanded drastically to include all school reps and all local executives to elect national executives of the union.

3. The primary reason for the demand for this section of members stems from

a. the allegations of widespread corruption among competing aspirants during the elections

b. the inability of the grassroots of the union to hold the higher leaders accountable, since they do not have any direct means of electing those who directly influence their welfare

c. members believe higher levels of leadership are helpless before the government/ employer, since all governments know that ordinary members can not take on the leaders of the union for their failures.

d. a lot of issues that are of concern to members have no sign of an end in sight and so, the lowest level of the union having the opportunity to vote based on such issues has the tendency to put the leaders on their toes to stop such repetitive events which end up affecting members, even in pension. For instance, members who are unable to be upgraded despite having their qualifications means their pension is greatly affected. Use of pension funds for questionable contracts like 1T1L which is yet to be delivered to all. And many more

e. In the case of the University Teachers Association (UTAG), even very important decisions like calling off a strike must be voted on by all members.

4. The group believe that a USSD short code can be developed for voting purposes over a few days and the voting platform analysed before and after the voting to deal with any fear of manipulation, since our mutual fund money even has a USSD short code for its operations. Money, which is even held in higher esteem, arguably.

5. The group also believe the huge resources that are used on an extra day (feeding, accommodations, snacks, per diem etc) for the purposes of GNAT elections can be easily channeled to develop any electronic voting system without the need for extra funds.
