Expert Recommended Handling of Meat Before Cooking [Nurses Diaries]

Meat is a common food in many diets and a very good source of many essential nutrients.

We normally wash meat with running water or in a bowl, but the question is , Is it safe ?

Meat including beef, poultry or any other meat contains pathogens including bacterial and virus.

Washing meat increases the risk for cross contamination in the kitchen which can cause food borne diseases.

 

Center for disease control and prevention warns that washing meat with plain running water doesn’t remove food borne pathogens.

You should be very careful to limit the contact of raw meat with surfaces and other foods.

How to safely handle raw meat

1.wash your hands before and after handling raw meat to avoid cross contamination.

2. Don’t use the same utensils for raw meat and other foods.

3. Use different cutting board for raw meat and other foods.

4. Don’t bring already cooked food in contact with raw meat.

Always cook your meat well to kill all bacterial and virus before eating.
