5 First Year Achievements Of GNAT Executives

The current crop of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) leaders has achieved some remarkable successes that was not expected by many, especially from the point of view of how previous GNAT executives had performed. The GNAT executives have equally had some fantastic failures in the one year of being in office. Leading a union of workers is by no means an easy task, especially dealing with an employer which can not be predicted. An observation of five (5) first year achievements of the current leaders of GNAT has thus been compiled.

1. First and foremost, one of the first year achievements of the current GNAT executives is their ability to easily collaborate with other teacher unions for a common goal. It must be emphasized that one of the observations that can be considered a failure of the past executives is their inability to cooperate with other teacher unions for a common goal which was a worry for their teeming members.

2. Another achievement of the current leaders of GNAT is their ability to be clear about their position and carry through. Playing to the gallery where union leaders declare what they want but can not initiate any action for the purposes of achieving such a position was a very great concern to teachers, but the current leaders of GNAT have shown, as part of their first year achievements, to be able to carry through their words.

3. To the specifics, one of the first year achievements of GNAT leaders in collaboration with other teacher unions is ability to force Government’s hand to call for a negotiations that resulted in the payment of the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to all public sector workers

4. Also, GNAT executives supported other teacher unions to demand the withdrawal of the appointments of the Deputy Director-General and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service on a basis that probably previous leaders of GNAT would not have done, whether justifiable or not.
