GNAT National Executives Engaged By President Akuffo-Addo At Flagstaff House. [What did they discuss?]
Highlight
The leadership of arguably the most powerful labour union in the country, GNAT, were engaged by the President of the country, Ghana.
The largest and most powerful labour union, GNAT, which until recently began to show a bit of its strength, may have necessitated the invitation by the president of the republic.
But what were the discussions centered on?
The leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), led by its president, Rev. Isaac Owusu had a closed-door meeting with the president of the republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the seat of government on Wednesday 10th August, 2022, to discuss several issues at the labour front and possibly to thank the president again for taking part in the National Delegates Congress held by the union in January this year 2022.
The visit to the seat of government on the 10th of this month, August, could have facilitated the payment of the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) demanded by teacher unions and eventually supported by the Trade Union Congress.

The fear, however, about the alleged closed-door meeting with the current leadership of GNAT, which has shown signs of being on the side of the ordinary teacher and ready to use its power vested in them by their teeming members, is the fear of being persuaded by the president of the country using the economic woes of the country as the bases, while the politicians show no sign of economic disaster, to limit the demands of GNAT and TUC for the negotiation of next year’s salary increment.
It will be recalled that GNAT was heavily involved and could be regarded as the main force behind the negotiated COLA for public sector workers.
